DAR and Local Activities

The Fresno-Yosemite Chapter participates in several programs to benefit local veterans including:

  • Operation Stand Down is a collaborative effort between most of the local veteran organizations and the VA.  They provide food, shelter, clothing, health screenings, VA and Social Security benefits counseling, and referrals to other services.  Our chapter is donating clothing, underwear, tote bags, towels, and canned food.
  • Home Front is a local homeless shelter for women veterans.  We assist by donating kitchenware and furniture, both for the shelter and to help women veterans when they move from the shelter into a home in the community.
  • Our VAVS representative works with the VA program director at the Fresno VA Medical Center to coordinate volunteer time. In December we spend many hours decorating Christmas trees and filling tote bags with gifts of clothing, snacks, and fleece throws for the hospital patients.

Additionally, our chapter participates in the following:

  • Scholarship money is raised and awarded to high school seniors at the annual DAR Good Citizens Tea and Awards program.
  • The Fresno County Fair is the site of an informational table shared by several historical and lineage societies. Our members talk to fair visitors and hand out information about NSDAR.
  • Snacks and comfort items are currently collected and sent to a member's daughter serving in Afghanistan to share with her unit.
  • Schools supplies, Easter basket items, and Christmas stocking gifts are given to foster children in the Fresno County area.
